 | Description | Description of Day: This PD is a great day for any teacher to come along and be shown through and experience a range of activities for your numeracy and literacy lessons. This full day workshop would be a great way to infuse new ideas and fun activities into any school and will be supported by comprehensive notes for each participant. Throughout the day the following topics will be covered;
Session 1: 9.00am to 10.45am Session Title: A Teacher’s Goodie Bag- Practical Skills and Activities that can be used in any classroom
As teachers, we all have our ‘meat and potatoes’ – our stock standard games and activities which are on standby for whenever they’re needed … but having the same diet does become a little boring and predictable – not just for the kids but for us as well. This workshop will provide you with a smorgasbord of entrees, mains and desserts which you can mix and match to suit almost any tastes. If you’re looking for some new games, or just keen to try a nibble of something new, then you’re sure to go home with a goodie bag full of tasty samples. In this session you will: • Learn a tasty menu of games and activities divided into entrees, mains and desserts • Exchange ideas with other teachers • Have as much fun as the kids will as you learn the games • Learn a few basic skills and tricks which will keep the kids guessing about your myriad of secret talents
Session 2: 11.00am to 12.45pm Session Title: How to teach maths like you love it
Teach maths like you love it is a session for all teachers who would like to add some zest into your maths lessons. Learn how to make your maths lessons creative and engaging that will not only have your students motivated but also you will get more out of your numeracy lessons. In this session you will: • Learn how the basics of a magic trick can connect with the Maths under-achiever • Experiment with all sorts of ‘non-maths’ resources in order to understand mathematical concepts and ideas • Find a connection between Maths and a student’s creativity and personal voice • Be given a collection of useful ‘tricks and mnemonics’
Session 3: 1.30pm to 3.00pm Session Title: Jump Off The Page
If your literacy lessons are getting a bit stale or predictable, or even if you just need a refresher, then this might just be the workshop for you. The essence of this workshop is to break up the routine of using books and to explore ways in which using literacy texts can become more dynamic. The aim of the workshop is to extend the way that you think about texts and to help you identify aspects of the texts can really ‘jump off the page’. In this session you will: • Be encouraged to see literacy texts as a stimulant rather than the educational equivalent of a drug of dependency • Uncover literacy activities which cover a range of learning styles • Be challenged to become an innovative language teacher • Learn that even if an activity doesn’t work as you thought it might, trying something different always has unexpected benefits
